Culture, Inefficiency and Opportunity

Culture

People think its cliché. Many assume its simply boilerplate talking points that companies throw out there. That’s just not true. Culture is extremely important and can be a predictor of success or failure. This is something professionals that have been at the same firm their entire careers, or at least long enough to have forgotten…forget. At some companies, a day in the life is as civilized as a royal party in a storybook. At others, people head home feeling like they just spent the day in the jungle. Those familiar with one type of organization may find the opposite completely baffling. You start your new job, take a look around and consider the chaos and wonder how anything ever gets done. Did you just make a huge mistake? The opposite is true in the slow and steady method of many well organized and structured firms. An organization that has all its procedures mapped out, responsibilities delineated and sectors “siloed” accordingly can work well for many. Each environment and style has its advantages and disadvantages. You should definitely get to know a firm’s culture prior to meeting.

Inefficiency and Opportunity

Often enough, the nature of a firm and its lack of organization can lead to huge inefficiencies. Within this type of firm, many people are doing exactly what they have done for years, pursuing business the way they know how to do it. However, this leads to many holes and areas of opportunity. The holes may not be as bad as they sound though. They are simply overlooked opportunities for new business development that an enterprising newcomer may see as gold. It might simply be a better process for identifying clients in an entirely new business line that those before you have simply missed. Assessing the culture and environment prior to accepting a position within the organization can go a long way in the next step of your career.

A company that is a well oiled machine is certainly more likely to be successful. Business practices have been improved for years and employees know how to execute an idea through completion. The firm runs on auto-pilot from a process perspective while the most talented professionals assure that standards continue feeding the bottom line. On the flip side,  an organization that has a procedure for everything can actually be fairly inefficient in that decisions take forever to be made given all the hierarchical bottlenecks. In fact, many trends and innovative products may have never been realized while employees are busy cutting through the corporate red tape. A fresh set of eyes coming from the outside can see things that many internally wouldn’t notice for years. That’s where the opportunities can be found. If the organization is open to this thought process and willing to give its workforce some breathing room, an enterprising and experienced professional can identify and create new lines of business and add value from day one.
