18 Jun How to be the leader your team deserves
Whether you’re the head of a company or the manager of a team, leadership is what sets you apart. Your team is counting on you to help navigate their path to success.
Lead with confidence and humility
As a leader you are the ultimate decision maker. Inevitably, not everyone will be on-board. It is important your message is relayed and received in the way it was intended.
A main attribute of a leader is confidence. However, it’s also important to exhibit an air of humility. Leading with confidence and humility may seem like an oxymoron. A true leader must embody confidence in decisions and directions while maintaining humility to be deemed approachable and deserving of respect. Another characteristic of a strong leader is the ability to recognize strengths and weaknesses in both yourself and your team members.
The strengths you have are the specific skills that brought you to the point of leading this team of professionals. However, one skill in your toolbox should be the ability to recognize when you need help. Delegating responsibilities and tasks to your team helps build confidence while allowing you to prioritize the top-level items that require your attention. You can’t do it all.
Surround yourself with the right people
In order to advance your goals, you should look to others to help you move forward. Build a team in whom you feel comfortable delegating responsibilities and confident the work will get done right. This includes delineating roles according to people’s strengths. This helps to alleviate some of the day-to-day tasks that your schedule doesn’t allow for and helps build confidence in your team. This confidence helps to motivate them to go above and beyond what you’ve asked. A motivated and efficient team member will welcome additional responsibility to prove their capabilities. When asked for help, they will surely be grateful and rise to the occasion.
Keep up to date on trends
While caught up in the daily workings of their organization it is possible for management to miss new developments and trends in the industry. Often enough, those being lauded as the leaders of today miss out on the successes of tomorrow. Leaders have to constantly look at trends, assess the organization’s strategy as it relates to these trends, and innovate forward.
Keep in touch
While managers are steering the ship towards its destination, they can often forget to check in with the crew. Having a firm grasp of the inner workings of your organization is a valuable management tool. Prioritize communication with your team members on a weekly basis.
If you run a smaller team, it might be optimal to meet individually. This creates an open forum for your team members to express new ideas, concerns and provide additional feedback that may be helpful to you. If you manage a larger team, weekly group meetings or conference calls can be the most effective and efficient way to stay informed. Touching base regularly shows your team that you, as a manager, are interested in hearing from them and helps them feel included in the organization and it’s progression.
Overall, a true leader must be able to maintain a presence of authority and command respect while building relationships with their team members, encouraging productivity and success.
